Sonus Success — Level 5

In this installation spotlight, Gregory Mater of Azurite Builders walks us through a large-scale Sonus acoustic project at Level5’s corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia.

The team completed nearly 500 Sonus Organics custom micro-perforated wood-veneer baffles across two spaces, each designed to manage reverberation and bring acoustic balance to modern architecture.

Facing tight deadlines and structural obstacles — from concrete beams to HVAC runs — Gregory and his crew built a precise unistrut grid to keep every baffle perfectly level and aligned. Partnering with Sonus, whose precision-drilled components ensured consistency across hundreds of panels, the project demonstrates how craftsmanship and manufacturing excellence meet on-site execution.

The result: a beautifully finished ceiling system that performs as well acoustically as it looks visually — a clear example of design, engineering, and installation working in harmony.

Hi, I’m Gregory Mater with Azurite Builders. We’re here in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Level5 corporate office.

We had a major wood-veneered baffle installation to accomplish in a very short amount of time — just under 500 baffles in two different rooms. These baffles are micro-perforated wood veneer with a fiberglass core. This allows sound waves to penetrate into the baffles and not escape. It’s one of the ways we balance a room acoustically and improve acoustic attenuation.

This particular project was pretty complex. One room had five sets of baffles in a row, and the other room had three sets of baffles and a 33-foot continuous run. The basic premise of the project was simple: keep the baffles level, true, and 90 degrees.

We had a concrete deck with concrete beams, HVAC equipment, and several other obstacles in our way. However, we laid a grid pattern out on the floor, established our connection points, hung unistrut, and created a grid system to support the baffles.

One of the keys to a project of this scale is the manufacturer. Our manufacturing partner, Sonus, did a fabulous job of producing these baffles — they’re true, straight, and precision-drilled for the nutserts we used to connect to the unistrut.

As you can see, the baffles turned out beautifully. All in all, I’d say this was a pretty amazing project. Thank you, Sonus. Thank you, Level Five. All out, here in Georgia.
